Abstract:
Arguably the most important written sources for fifth-century Irish history are two contemporary epistles written by St Patrick. The epistles survived in seven medieval manuscript witnesses. Electronic transcriptions of the manuscript witnesses were developed during a research project at the University of Dublin and are currently being implemented in form of a digital edition into the GAMS, the digital asset management system developed at the ZIM - ACDH.
While previous editions of Patrick’s writings attempted primarily to compare the textual evidence of the surviving manuscript witnesses, the new edition explores the text in its manuscript context. The variant readings are recorded alongside information about text structure and scribe-related features. These electronic transcriptions advance our knowledge about Patrick’s epistles and allow for the first time an in-depth electronic study of the medieval manuscript witnesses and will give new insights into how these documents are structured and how they were copied by medieval scribes.
